The Hardman and Henry families have been in Mills County since 1901. They owned adjacent farms on Saylor Mountain near the Kelly-South Bennett Communities about six miles south of Goldthwaite. Not only were they neighbors and friends, they became kinsmen through the marriages of some of their children. George Naaman Hardman was born in Atlanta, Georgia May 17, 1851. He came to Texas with his family at the age of seventeen, settling first in Navarro County, where he married Isabelle Maupin in 1878 and had five children. Later he moved his family to San Saba County, where he lost his first wife and one child, then married Victoria Whitley on January 26, 1898. Victoria had been born in North Carolina on January 6, 1877 and had come to Texas as a child. She was reared by grandparents, the Peels, in Mason County. In 1901, Naaman and Victoria bought the Mills County Farm where they reared his four children and four girls born to Victoria. The older children were Lydia, Naaman (Buck), Maud and Claud. The younger girls were Hattie Elizabeth, Lucy Pearl, Myrtle Belle and Jewel Idell. When Naaman’s health failed they sold the farm and moved to town. He passed away on October 27, 1928. Jewel lived with her mother until she married Clarence Hardin. At the time of her death on March 23, 1968, Victoria was living with her daughter, Hattie (Mrs. Fred Jones) in Comanche. She and Naaman are buried in Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery. Jewel and Clarence had one son, Edwin, who lives in Goldthwaite. He works for the county and raises cattle on the farm in Caradan. Jewel died September 16, 1993. She and Clarence are buried in Goldthwaite Cemetery also. Pearl married Walter Henry (see separate biography), Myrtle married O.Z. Berry of Pleasant Grove and they had one child, Ruby D. (Mrs. Jude) Miles who now resides on Parker Street in Goldthwaite. Submitted by Oleta Henry Cox for the Mills County History Book |
